Hand drawing tutorials / demos « Portrait Artist from Westchester, NY – Anne Bobroff-Hajal

Hand drawing tutorials / demos « Portrait Artist from Westchester, NY – Anne Bobroff-Hajal | Drawing and Painting Tutorials | Scoop.it

In this tutorial, we’ll take on the dreaded foreshortened finger (in this case, the pointer).  The hand is often considered the most difficult of all subjects to draw, partly because we so often see the fingers from angles that conflict with our mental shorthand of them as tube-shaped.

Through the magic of right-brained seeing, though, the foreshortened finger becomes fairly easy to draw because it’s seen as a shape like any other shape.

In fact, it occurs to me that the much-feared foreshortened finger may actually be the best tool to help shift you  to right-brained seeing.  Its shape is so alien to our standardized image of “finger” that we have no other choice than to abstract how we see it.  Look at the schematic below to illustrate this (with continuing apologies for my blue smashed fingernail).

Drawing Perspective - How to Draw Perspective

Drawing Perspective - How to Draw Perspective | Drawing and Painting Tutorials | Scoop.it

This lesson focuses on the subjects of perspective and vanishing points

The video shows a very quick sketch of a room (which is made up) that demonstrates the two point linear perspective, which is the most commonly used by artists. Notice the two vanishing points on the horizon. In this case both of the vanishing points are inside the sheet of paper. This is not always the case. When drawing, the vanishing points will always be on the horizon. The horizon will always be on the level of the eyes of the observer. Notice how on the sketch all the parallel lines converge to the same vanishing point.

Drawing interior spaces is a very good way to understand perspective. For practice, try drawing the rooms inside your house.

Create a Fantasy Warrior Painting From Scratch

Create a Fantasy Warrior Painting From Scratch | Drawing and Painting Tutorials | Scoop.it
Let's face it - everyone likes fantasy. And girls. And fantasy girls. Not everyone can draw them though. Follow this tutorial and hopefully you'll learn a lot about painting your own fantasy character!

Start with a basic sketch of the pose of your character. No details, just rough lines. If you don’t feel so sure about your anatomy/pose skills, don’t hesitate to use one of SenshiStock references (link above). One tip about it: if your goal is to be able to draw any pose without references in the future, don’t just trace the picture, place it next to you and try to draw the lines you see. DON’T DRAW OVER THEM! You’d get a perfect copy this way, but it would not teach you anything.

"Butterfly wings can be very different, small or big, wide or narrow, colorful or transparent, round or ragged. However, there are features common to all kinds of butterflies.

When it comes to the structure of the wings, it’s the same for all butterflies. Butterfly wings are basically triangular, with three margins that round their shape – costal, outer and inner one. The forewings have also an apex that makes them longer."

Manga Tutorials - How to Shade Your Drawings

Manga Tutorials - How to Shade Your Drawings | Drawing and Painting Tutorials | Scoop.it

Basics
Shading can be a bit tricky at first but its not as difficult as it seems. The picture to the right shows a light bulb and several geometrical shapes; circle, triangle, cylinder, and a square.

You'll notice that one side of the shape is light and the other is darkened. All you need to know or keep in mind is just that. What the light doesn't hit, it is darkened. In this example, all you have to do is picture the light source and the object which is being hit by the light --  which part will the light hit? How far will the light go?

You also have to ask yourself where is the light source coming from? If the light is far above, the shorter the shadow is (try checking out your shadow at noon - 12:00PM) whereas the lower the light, the longer the shadow will become. According to the light source, make your shadow fit accordingly.

Good thing to remember also: what is the shape of the object I'm giving a shadow? Each of the shapes in the picture each have their own unique cast. The triangle has a pointy shadow, the circle has a circular shadow, the cylinder has a rectangular shadow, and the cube has a "L"-like shadow. At a different angle, though, the cube will cast a different shadow shape. For instance, if the light was head-on to one of the flat sides, it will cast a square to rectangular shadow depending on the light source's height.

With that in mind, you also need to remember: what is the shape of the object the shadow is falling on top of? The current example only has a flat surface on which the shadows fall but in most cases, shadows of - say a character - will fall on rocks or on water, which will look different compared to each other.
